Comments and Observations

This section is not a general review of the series, but rather just a place for personal opinions, comments, and observations about the series - a place to rant a little, if you like. First off, I'd like to say that Bubblegum Crash gets a bum wrap from way too many people. Is it the same as the first series, i.e. is the world the same? Not even close, even though the characters are supposed to be. Does it have some significant problems which AIC probably should have caught or at least been more careful with? Sure, but then again, so does the original series. But does it deserved to be slandered as widely as it has been? I really don't think so.

One complaint a lot of people have is that the seiyuu (voice actress) for Priss changed, and that the new actress is too far from the original to be true to Priss' character, and yet too close to the original voice for listening comfort. Everyone I've ever talked to has said that the original actress was better. Well, to me that's a lot like saying a book is better than a movie that has been made from the book. If you've seen the original, you've generally acclimated to the original format (the book in my analogy) and so you would expect the movie to be the same. Since the movie conforms to someone else's ideal rather than your own, you are often disappointed. Well, the change in voice actresses was necessary due to a singing contract which could not be changed. But what if the Bubblegum Crash actress had been the original rather than the "replacement"? Would we still be complaining about the quality of the voice? I suspect so.

Another complaint I hear is that the world is totally different. This is really a valid complaint, since there are so many changes in the world between Crisis and Crash that it would be almost fairer to say that Bubblegum Crash exists in a parallel universe to Bubblegum Crisis. But does this invalidate the entire series? Of course not. It means that you have to take the second series as an independent whole, not necessarily as a continuation of the first series. I personally feel that half the complaints I hear about Bubblegum Crash are made by people who cannot or will not make this jump.

Finally, the more I watch these three episodes, the more impressed I am with them. I guess you could say that they've really started to grow on me. Not because they're in the same world as Bubblegum Crisis, but rather because they have their own charm and internally consistent logic and plot. I feel that it's really too bad that more people can't enjoy Bubblegum Crash because of thier initial exposure to the first series. Bubblegum Crash is really quite good.
